There is not a single doubt when we say that trees are the fundamental unit of life. Their presence enhances our lives in whole new level. Their elegance captures our hearts and as we all know, trees are versatile. Their whole purpose is versatile. Their use, the way they live, where they live somehow help both the living and non-living beings surrounding it. For instance, there are a whole lot of creatures like birds and other animals that find their homes amidst the branches of the tree. Even the leaves that fall can help us in a lot of ways out of which some ways may remain unexplainable. There would be a never-ending list of the advantages of trees, if someone ever decides to make a list.
There are a lot of countries that depend upon burning woods which is their only source of fuel for domestic use. This fuel is also known as biomass. Biomass is known to be one of the most efficient fuels and is used across the globe. We interviewed a local tree removal las vegas company about biomass and this is what we gathered.
WHAT IS BIOMASS?
Biomass is an industrial word for obtaining energy by the process of combustion of wood. This energy is used for different purposes such as domestic use, and even industrial purpose.
Earlier, the use of biomass was discouraged as it was found that the gases that were emitted during the combustion added to the Greenhouse gases. But later, it was found that biomass energy can be considered as a renewable energy as the lost energy can be replaced by planting more trees. And the oxygen produced cancelled out any CO2 emissions. Hence the use of biomass energy can be well supported.
SOURCES OF BIOMASS
Wood has been identified as the largest source of biomass energy. This large contribution is usually from forests as they have dead and broken branches, wood chips and even decayed tree stumps.
Lignocellulosic biomass is from which wood energy is extracted or derived. Pulp obtained from the trees, “Black liquor” is obtained from the paper industry is the largest of source of energy from wood. This black liquor is extracted from the waste products of the paperboard industries.
TREES THAT INCREASE BIOMASS PRODUCTION
As good as it is to have a whole forest to provide biomass energy, there arise problems as some people may take advantage of the situation and cut down healthy trees for their domestic use. Hence it is advisable that we increase the biomass production and keep the ecosystem in check as well.
Thanks to biotechnology, through genetic modifications, the genes of a tree can be altered to create more biomass.
It is found that the lateral buds in some trees are suppressed to growth during varying seasons like summer or winter. But some buds continue to grow and contribute to the full growth of the tree by increasing leaf area and even increasing the number of branches, thus increasing the biomass production. Hence keeping these factors in mind, researchers have found a way to increase the biomass production by modifying the gene expression levels of the trees.
